Falling in Love Again?

“First best is falling in love. Second best is being in love. Least best is falling out of love. But any of it is better than never having been in love.”

-  Maya Angelou

February has been labeled as the month of love according to our calendars, and Valentine’s Day is considered a holiday for many households and couples. I know some of you might say, “We don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, it’s overrated and all about money” or “I show my partner how much I love them every day”.

As time passes, we can lose interest in or focus on certain aspects of our relationship. The couples that stay connected for years have many shared interests and embrace the concept of exploration. Getting stuck in habits and old routines can create boredom and setting unrealistic expectations leads to unnecessary stress within the relationship. Finding that sweet balance between maintaining and pushing your relationship forward takes daily intentionality. Here are three ways you can find balance within your relationship:

1.        Find time to explore new hobbies or interests together. Take turns choosing an activity that you could both potentially enjoy.

2.        Have regular check-ins (weekly, monthly, etc.) with each other about the state of your relationship. Identify strengths and ways to improve weaknesses.

3.        Maintain your own personal goals, friendships and creative outlets. Time apart is just as important as time together.

We encourage you to explore and try out something new with your partner this month. Get out and be adventures with no expectations or preconceived notions. The quality of time together will always outweigh the quantity. Don’t get stuck in the gimmicks or perceived obligations that comes with Valentine’s Day or any holiday for that matter. The opportunities you create on a daily, weekly or even yearly basis are how you stay connected and engaged with one another. Today and every day, remember to lead with love.
